I found this super relevant to making, being a creative person, and what motivates me to create. Mr. Duhigg also goes on to talk about the habits of Apple and touches on Nike. Where do you live? What makes it a community? Who are the people and businesses that make your area unique?

You will either be doing one of the following.

1. Create a new business or organization that will foster a sense of community in your neighborhood.

2. Rebrand an existing small to medium sized business.

3. Developing an event or service that would bring your neighborhood together.

4. Entire neighborhood identity.

Some items to think about: Where do you live? What do you like about your neighborhood? What is lacking? What would improve the atmosphere? What would make it feel more like a community? More unique and less homogenous? What small businesses and services are within walking/biking distance of where you live? What kind of business or service is needed?

Is there a business in your neighborhood that has great products or services but lacks a strong visual presence and effective branding?

Do you frequent an existing business you wish was closer to your home? Maybe there’s not a place to find fresh fruit and vegetables. Maybe you need a community garden? How would it feel? Here’s a chance to give it a name, a personality, an identity.

Maybe your neighborhood just needs a place to hang out. A bookstore? A theatre? Live music? You can design it. What kind of business or organization would bring others to your neighborhood?

Maybe there’s a challenging aspect of your area that is preventing people from relating to each other. Maybe there’s too much fast traffic or a lack of green space. Maybe you don’t feel safe walking at night in your own neighborhood. Can you imagine an organization, design an identity and a creative awareness campaign to solve the problem?

Research: Brainstorm. Investigate your neighborhood. Document what exists. What is missing in your community? What do you wish for? Take a poll of your neighbors. What would they want to improve the ten square blocks that surround their dwelling space? Sketch. Take a series of photos. What type of business would work?

Identify a business or organization that would fit into your community. Research and collect logos, symbols, icons, wordmarks, combination marks of similar businesses. Collect inspiration and put together a moodboard. Include a list of words that represent your brand and be faithful to those terms in all the applications you design. Stay authentic and communicate the integrity that is the core of your business/service/organization.

Decide on an approach. Define your direction.

Create Campaign Materials: develop an appropriate campaign to raise awareness, increase visibility and encourage business.

Apply the identity to appropriate and creative forms that will best promote and bring maximum positive impact. Put the logo to use in real-world scenarios. How you communicate is just as important as what you communicate. Think about what specific applications will convey your message and build visibility.

Deliverables: You must have at least six individual pieces for the campaign. Designs may include but are not limited to: letterhead package, signage, sidewalk sandwich board, vehicle identification, banner, ad, postcard, flyer, direct mail, packaging, menu, bookmark, tee shirt, hang tag, shopping bag, coaster, environmental graphic, point-of-purchase, display, poster, website, bus shelter, calendar, notepad, non-traditional/guerilla marketing.

Creative Brief: Develop a written creative brief that succinctly articulates the business and the scope of the project.

Objectives: Design a unique, memorable logo for a business, service, or organization.

Develop a visual campaign that uses the identity in a coordinated, consistent series of marketing materials.

Evaluation: Evaluation will be based on process, concept, form and composition, typography, and craft.

Your final campaign may be handed in as a brand book or handed in as actual pieces. The choice it up to you. If some of you live in the same neighborhood, you may work in teams of two.

Due Dates:

Thursday, February 23rd: Neighborhood Research. Short slide presentation about where you live. Please make this no longer than 5 minutes. Take photographs of businesses, your neighbors, unique aspects of your area. Present elements that you love. Present elements that you wish were different. Propose three possible project ideas.

Tuesday, February 28th: Creative brief is due. Please present at least three well organized mood boards that relate to your idea and please present preliminary designs for mark (12 different concepts-no credit if they are rehashed versions of the same idea) show examples on deliverables (ie: business card, t-shirt, packaging, signage etc). 3 ideas will be selected to pursue. Flickr Post! Please bring in all process materials as well.

Thursday, March 1st: 3 strongest mark ideas revised. Presented in b/w; color, + shown in context as 2 deliverables. For each provide supportive visual language. It’s ok to experiment with visual language to get the right combination. One idea will be selected for lock down! (Lock down-how the mark, text and color will remain consistent) Flickr Post and print out.

Tuesday, March 6th: Small Group Critique. You should have your final ID today plus examples of how it is implemented on your deliverables.

Thursday, March 8th: One on One meetings. Bring all of your elements.

Tuesday, March 13th: Final Critique. Present your solutions to the class.

Thursday, March 15th: NO CLASS / Kate is out of town.

*Final Meeting Time* Tuesday, March 20th: All elements and/or brand books DUE at 10:15AM.

(via Photography for Designers « Jessica Walsh)

They work with different designers every year and past designers have included Yee-Haw Industries and Print Liberation. Their wordmark and wine names stays the same, while their labels change and feature a new look every year. The concept is to highlight the designer and their wine. Pretty cool. Thanks Municipal Wines!

Designing the fronts of the labels was a super fun process, but I will admit, the backs were a lot less fun. It is really easy to forget about the backs…so, remember: along with designing your front labels, you need to be thinking about the required information that goes on the backs. I am going to share with you some examples of the copy that I used on the backs of these labels…feel free to modify to fit your own wine, but you must include the following government warning:

GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) ACCORDING TO THE SURGEON GENERAL, WOMEN SHOULD NOT DRINK ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES DURING PREGNANCY BECAUSE OF THE RISK OF BIRTH DEFECTS. (2) CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES IMPAIRS YOUR ABILITY TO DRIVE A CAR OR OPERATE MACHINERY, AND MAY CAUSE HEALTH PROBLEMS.

PRODUCED AND BOTTLED BY: YOUR WINERY NAME AND LOCATION GOES HERE. CONTAINS SULFITES

You back text may include a paragraph about the wine, the story of your winery etc. This is the copy that will help tell the story of your design and your wine. Take this part seriously, but have fun with it. See sample back copy that I used for a red wine label here. This is just an example of how much text was used and an example of a story being told. Make your story relate to YOUR wine.

Your front label must include: name of the wine, your wordmark, the year it was bottled, the percentage of alcohol by volume (you can make this up, but make it realistic, please).

Make your back and front label relate! Include a similar illustration, typeface, color etc to tie the front in with the back.

Let’s do this!

8 Awesome Wine Labels

1. Labels that are both robust and informative. Never shall you wonder which vino to pair with that pulled pork masterpiece. (designed by Ellie Snow)

2. Finally! A wine to match your Novembeard. The fancier the stache, the fancier the wine, according to these labels. (source)

3. Keep your pets close and your reds closer. (designed by Bailey Lauerman)

4. Morse Code is the language of love. That, or of a delicious Australian shiraz. (designed by Parallax)

5. This pour could get a bit messy. (Possum Wines)

6. There’s something comical about this label’s awesomeness. (by Mash Design for Esule wines)

7. No words. (designed by Dorian)

8. If wine is poetry, these labels narrate their contents. (designed by WORKlab)

Wordmarks are freestanding acronym, company name, or product name that has been designed to convey a brand attribute or positioning. Examples: IKEA, ebay, Google, Tate, Nokia, MoMA. Check out our visual set of wordmark examples.

There are a wide variety of marks that can be created, but for our purposes with this project we are going to focus on making lovely wordmarks.

CHEERS! SALUT! HUZZAH! Wine Wordmark & Bottle...

CHEERS! SALUT! HUZZAH! Wine Wordmark & Bottle Series.

PROJECT OVERVIEW: Brand and promote a winery/vineyard that has multiple varieties of wine to offer. You will be creating a wordmark for the winery and packaging for at least three varieties of wine.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You may work in teams of two if you wish.

GENERAL SPECS: For your new brand develop a 1–2 page report (typed, sources cited). Develop a Brand Name (explanatory paragraph with paper), Wordmark (both one color and multi-colored) and Packaging for at least three varieties of wine.

RESEARCH/REPORT: Begin by brainstorming and write down everything you know about wine and anything else regarding the consumption of wine and the wine tasting experience. Visit the wine aisle in your local grocery store and make observations. Visit some wine bars and take notes. Do some factual research on how wine is made and distributed. In doing your research and writing your report you may want to start by answering the following: Why develop another line of wines? What are some recent trends in wine consumption? What trends are working? What do you want to accomplish with your winery? How will yours be different from the others?

Your 1-2 page typed double spaced report should demonstrate your understanding of this project, include any research done, and state your target audience and broad approach for the campaign. Take time to write and proof-read your paper!

BRAND NAME: Come up with at least 20 names, then edit down. Select a name for the winery and develop a paragraph that states why the name is appropriate for the audience it is meant to appeal to. Carefully develop the required paragraph about the name. The initial concept for this campaign is crucial and will impact all aspects of its evolution. Create an idea that you will be thrilled to take to its conclusion. You should incorporate several different names when working with your initial wordmark iterations.

MOODBOARDS: Create several different moodboards for wordmarks and packaging. Remember our moodboard lecture from the beginning of the term? Make organized moodboards with keywords and possible ideas. Your moodboards will be always evolving throughout this project. Take a look at our collection of wine bottle inspiration!

DUE DATES:
Tuesday, January 31st: Your project brief, 20 names and moodboards. Preliminary designs for mark. You should have an enormous pile of wordmarks (using a variety of names) for us to look at. We will be picking 12 to refine and explore. You should have your name selected by the end of class as well. Remember: lots of pencil sketches and perhaps a few digital type explorations…but more pencil than digital.

Thursday, February 2nd: At least 12 different concepts (no credit if they are rehashed versions of the same idea). Bring in moodboards related to your label illustrations and packaging concept. 3 wordmarks will be selected to pursue.

Tuesday, February 7th: 3 strongest mark ideas revised. Presented in b/w; color, + shown in context with rough draft of labels. One idea will be selected for lock down! (Lock down-how the mark, text and color will remain consistent).

Thursday, February 9th: Final wordmark presented with all three label designs + additional packaging.

Tuesday, February 14th: Final crit for entire project.

Thursday, February 16th: EVERYTHING DUE! Bring in final bottles for photoshoot day.

Branding? Branding!

BRANDING is kind of a terrible word but it’s all we have.

Branding cannot replace value. Branding is not camouflage. Branding will not convince anyone of lies — for more than a minute.

One of the things that separates graphic design from fine art is that in graphic design, the evaluation happens before the art.

You can start a painting and not figure out what it’s saying until halfway through (or not at all!), but a design has something to say, a clear task, before it’s created.

For our purposes, branding is the understanding of the company or project or product that informs the visuals. Before you can solve the problem, you first grok (look it up) the problem.

Then throw it away. Play around. Don’t overthink it. Rote designs are bad. Obvious designs are bad. Your creativity is a great tool. Delight is essential!

art225:
